Structure

Earth Dialogues Barcelona will take place over two days (5 - 6 February). The first morning will take place in plenary format with opening statements, keynote addresses, as well as panel discussions and public debate.

The afternoon of 5 February and the morning of 6 February will be framed by a series of simultaneous roundtables, which will address the set of common themes described below. Each of the three roundtables will represent a particular sector (i.e. government, civil society, and business and industry).

Each roundtable will be composed of ten speakers, with five from the sector concerned and five individuals representing other sectors such as international and regional institutions, elected officials, religious and spiritual groups, the scientific and technology community and other key major groups.

Each of the three simultaneous roundtables will address a similar set of questions, which will be based on the following key themes:

  • The new Mediterranean and global sustainability challenges

  • The new Mediterranean and global security challenges

  • Strategies for operationalising the Millennium Development Goals in the Mediterranean region and in the world at large

  • Political strategies for advancing the new global agenda
The afternoon of 6 February will take place in plenary format and will involve reports of the work of the simultaneous roundtables, as well as a public debate on those conclusions. These sessions will be followed by a panel of Nobel Laureates from different disciplines (i.e. peace, literature, economics, medicine and biology) who will address the future of multilateralism in the new Millennium.
