Structure
The Earth Dialogues propose a ten-year vision for the period
between the Earth Summit +10 in Johannesburg and the Earth
Summit +20. Comprised of five Regional Earth Dialogues (RED)
and one International Earth Dialogues (IED), each cycle of
Earth Dialogues will last 2 years, allowing for five rounds
by 2012. Each round of REDs will investigate a specific set
of questions on different continents over the two-year interval
(Africa, Asia/Pacific, Europe, Latin America, North America)
maintaining a regional and local focus. Each cycle of
REDS will culminate in an IED, a global assembly convened
to examine the findings, recommendations and initiatives of
the REDs at the international level based on a dynamic, bottom-up
approach.
Regional Earth Dialogues
During each two-year round of Earth Dialogues, the REDs will
tackle, on a region-by-region basis, the chosen topic under
investigation adjusted to reflect the region's particular
interests, concerns and priorities. By convening REDs across
continents, the Earth Dialogues will incorporate the greatest
possible number of cultures and voices, giving them the opportunity
to contribute to the ethics and sustainability debate. This
process is intended to gather an accumulation of regional
views and solutions on each major topic, in order to develop
an international people-oriented outlook on the issues linked
to ethics-based sustainable development.
International Earth Dialogues
At the end of each two-year round of REDs, Lyon will provide
the setting for a global assembly that will debate the focus
issue at the international level. The IED will provide a platform
for reporting and evaluating the accumulated findings of the
REDs and encourage the generation and launching of international
action-oriented proposals and political strategies. At the
end of each round, key Moderators and Speakers from the REDs
will be invited to the IED as Roundtable Speakers to discuss
regional insights and recommendations, thus ensuring continuity,
diversity and equitable representation.
